Tūrangawaewae.

What is our story?
How will they know?

We all know that a rebuild and redevelopment project is disruptive and challenges our sense of ownership and belonging. We also know that there are elements of our school history that may be lost through our redevelopment process, and as we craft our future.

Our school is a place we belong and if work is happening to it we want our children and families to be part of the new story and to be able to own that story and repeat it for generations to come. We all have a Tūrangawaewae, a place where we have authority to stand. We’ve been working on our cultural narrative, which describes what is unique about our place and helps us make connections to the land and the people.

During the first half of 2021, right across the school, we’ve been defining this story. We’ve been looking at our past so we can understand our heritage and values, and then thinking about ways we can apply that story to our future at Paparoa Street School. This helps us know what our place is, what happened here in the past. and allows us to think about how we weave that story into the design of our learning spaces. .

The learning in this inquiry has been rich and meaningful and the children have delivered this to our architects and project managers and are waiting in anticipation of how this story will be represented in our buildings and our landscaping.

The presentation below is the first in a series. Take your time to browse, learn and be inspired by the children’s thoughts and creativity.

Student Design Trip.

In July this year, 20 students from across all three kāinga went on an inquiry trip to Lyttelton and Sumner School. We had a tour of their learning spaces and heard about how their story has been translated into their school. We shared our learning with our classes on our return and this helped us think about ideas we might use in our designs. This presentation shows you what we learned.
