Awa Rebuild Update
These beautiful images show the extent of the development of the Rangi courtyard and Awa building spaces over the spring holiday break. We have clearly defined play areas, including the waharoa entrance to the Rangi courtyard , the pou pointing to the stars of Matariki, and our beautiful, strong hammock to lie in for stargazing.
Rangi has new seats and planter boxes waiting for some edible garden delights. The shared courtyard has varied surfaces of stone, tree rounds, decking stages, and artificial turf, which will all be accessible from the Rangi and Awa learning spaces. A new sand pit, this time with grey river sand, is a feature within the courtyard.
The Awa buildings are well under way with the installation of the kitchen and art spaces. Now that all the buildings are linked by walkway and deck, it is easy to see the flow of the buildings and how easy it will be to move between the buildings.
The end is definitely in sight. 2023 looks like a great year for being "at home" in our new kāinga. Keep checking this out for further updates.

Whenua Settled In
With the children now fully settled into the new Whenua building, we thought it would be a nice opportunity to share with you some images of the children learning within these spaces, both inside and outdoors. The Whenua landscaping has had its final check, the last elements to come are the toys for the sandpit and the sandpit cover.

Awa Build and Landscaping
Awa is making good progress; this week, drainage is going in, bathrooms are being installed, and the decking and boardwalks which will run along outside the classrooms are being built.
The landscape is really starting to take shape and it looks fantastic. The hard landscape is starting to go down, with pathways being laid this week. In addition, work benches and a sandpit have already been constructed. The pou have been installed; the seven pou erected towards the east end of the area represent the seven Matariki stars.

Whenua Landscape Update
With the Whenua building now complete and occupied by some very happy students and teachers, we were able to turn our attention to the landscaping for Whenua which was completed last week. The initial design for the gabions was to indicatively represent the stratigraphy of the land with bands of different stones. Unfortunately, it was not possible to accurately represent the stones and gravels found in the area because of the availability of stone and with the gravels being too fine to sit in place within the metal gabion box.
Instead, we have purposely selected 4 different types of stone that are found within the local geological area. The black (basalt) and red (volcanic Port Hills) stone relate to the volcanic origins of the Port Hills and Banks Peninsula. The yellow (limestone) relate to the sedimentary uplift in the coastal environment, and lastly the grey (greywacke) relates to the alluvial plains and riverbeds which washed down from the Southern Alps. The end result looks fantastic!
The Pou will be used for wayfinding with signage to come.
Access to Rangi
The basketball court is to be asphalted in the coming weeks. Once this is complete, access to Rangi will be from the back of the building only (opposite Whenua). This will allow the construction workers full access to complete the landscape in front of Rangi.

Awa Rebuild Update
The building work in Awa and landscaping between both Awa and Rangi is happening simultaneously, there was a delay with the inclement weather but with clearer skies we will be seeing more progress in the coming weeks. There are 4 workbenches (similar to the mud kitchen) that have been built which will feature in the Awa/Rangi landscaping.

Awa Rebuild Update
Kia ora Paparoa whanau. It has been a while coming but we have been informed that we now have funding for Stage 2 of the rebuild. We expected to know this sooner, however now that this funding has arrived, we are eager to get on with it and it’s exciting for Awa to finally be moving into the next stage.
You will have read the communications that have been provided over the preceding months to the community and will have recognised the building redevelopment will have significant impact for Paparoa Street School. The intended start date for Stage 2 is Wednesday 13th April - this is next week, right before the upcoming school holidays. This communication is aimed to help you understand what will be happening for your children during this work and when this will begin.
When does Stage 2 building work start?
From next Wednesday 13th April, the last week of Term 1, work will commence on the demolition of part of the Awa blocks and the surrounding playground, sandpit and court areas. This will mean the whole of the current Awa & Rangi Kāinga buildings will be within or on the fringe of the building work zone.
How does this affect Awa Kāinga ?
In order to get this kicked off and start the demolition as quickly as possible, we ask parents who have children in the Awa Kāinga to keep their children at home on Wednesday 13th April if they can. Having all of Awa Kāinga at home will give us space and increased flexibility to accelerate the commencement of this phase.
How will this affect my child/children?
At this stage, it is difficult to know how long the demolition phase will take, however in the first instance, most of Awa will be unaffected by this building work. However children in Pātangatanga (the Y3 - Y4 class), will be the first to be affected because their classrooms are being demolished first. This means the Pātangatanga will be relocated immediately to another area within Awa. There is further information specifically for Pātangatanga further down in this update.
How will the new spaces in Awa be utilised for learning?
We have thought carefully about how this will be managed. For those in Pātangatanga, we will be relocating you into existing spaces in Awa which will best accommodate the needs of these children.
A draft map of the immediate short term modifications is included in this information below. The rooms located at the east end of Whaitere and Pāua iti will house this group. Pātangatanga will use both these spaces and will be free to move between the spaces using external access.
Update: 15 March 2022
Whenua
The Whenua space is really starting to come together, the framing has gone up and now we can start to envisage how this space will work.
You will see how the new and old areas are connected which will create some lovely flow through the spaces. The extension to Whenua is large and will house some new spaces to support learning including a breakout room for small group learning and a kitchen for food nutrition and technology teaching and learning
Whenua student manifestations - rebuild enquiry
During the inquiry we did last year into our the story of our spaces, the children explored and shared opinions on how the spaces in Whenua will work. This year we have extended this into a design focus where they have created beautiful manifestations.
The following designs created by the children will proudly be used throughout Whenua kāinga to represent how these areas will be used and will assist in telling the story of the kāinga.
Here is test we ran to see how these student’s designs could be displayed on a dividing door for example.
Administration Area
The new administration block is almost complete! This week we’re having a final walk through and then the official handover will be beginning of April.
We’re really happy with how this space has come together, there are various meeting rooms, a large sick bay and a welcoming space for our staffroom. The internal fit out of joinery , appliances and furniture is a school responsibility and is not provided as part of the build project. All going to plan we hope to move into this space, ready for the beginning of Term 2.
Update: 9 February 2022
What progress was made over the holidays.
Last week, Keith (foreman) and Grant (Project Manager) took the Board of Trustees on a tour through all the spaces undergoing renovation and rebuild at the school. We were really happy with the progress and excited about the spaces being created. Below are some snaps to show you how everything is looking behind the scenes!
Rangi
The team have been working hard over the Christmas period, with tricky conditions to deal with relating to closed roads around the perimeter of the school.
The electrical team in particular had a massive job to tackle, with 13 hours a day, 6 days a week. The result is all new electrical throughout Rangi, all new emergency lights, all rewired.
The boilers have been removed and new heatpumps installed throughout.
The library is complete and feels bigger than expected, with great access from three sides.
The universal bathroom is almost complete.
Whenua
Whenua is undergoing a massive transformation and we are excited about how bright and open the space will be with large rooms. It has been entirely stripped back and is awaiting all new windows and lining.
The foundation piles have been laid for the soon to be new extension.
New Admin Block
The main areas within the New Admin block are now being lined. The staffroom and kitchen are taking shape as is the reception area.
The bathroom, health room and meeting spaces have been framed up.

Term 4 Recap
With Term 4 coming to a close, we thought it would be a nice time to recap what has been achieved over the school term in terms of building progress and what the school and Brosnan Builders have planned to achieve over the coming Summer break. We have included a gallery of images below.
Whenua: Has been completely stripped out in preparation for the extension. Over the Summer break the next stage is for the concrete piles to be poured for the new extension foundations.

Rangi Upgrades: At the opposite end of the Rangi Block (Year 5 & 6 areas) The Universal Bathroom is be completed over the Christmas break. The installation of heating and air-conditioning systems into Rangi will also take place.
In addition to the ongoing build, external work will take place. Trenching for the Services and Infrastructure from the new Admin Block to both Rangi and Whenua.

Behind the scenes with Brosnan Construction.
Brosnan Construction provides us with an update on what’s been going on during the demolition phase at our school. We also get a sneak peek behind the scenes into the classrooms and spaces that are being worked on.
Update: 15 October
Farewell to the library.
On the final Thursday of term 3, we held a "first and last" school experience. We took the opportunity to farewell our school library building which is being repurposed as our administration block in our rebuild project. We acknowledged our old library with a whole school Caught reading event. We all gathered to share kai , Nigel Eames spoke to us about his memories of the library and what he is looking forward to in our new library space. This year's student librarians formed a guard of honour as the red shelving was ceremoniously carried down the library steps and rolled out to its temporary homes in each of the kainga.
Children will be able to access books in their kainga this term and we are hopeful we will be in our new library space again by the beginning of 2022 - something exciting for Mrs Martin to look forward to. If you are looking for Cheryll Martin this term she is housed in the IN room in Whenua block - come to the office first and then we will find her for you.

Contractors have arrived.
The builders have moved on site and have shifted our storage spaces to usable places around the school.

Temporary hall teaching space.
Here is our temporary hall teaching space for the Whenua Kāinga. Carpet has been installed and moveable partitions have been built to create smaller learning spaces.

Update: 28 September
Rebuild start date announcement.
We are finally very pleased to be able to confirm that the Ministry of Education have delivered a letter of intent to Brosnan Construction indicating their intent to engage the company for stage 1 of our school redevelopment. This has been a long drawn out process and we are very glad to see the beginning of this work albeit now within a very short time frame to commencement date.
The intended start date for Stage 1 is Monday 4th October - this is in the upcoming school holidays.
We have not been certain of this work commencing but especially since returning to school in Level 3 we have been working hard to ready ourselves. As I mentioned we have been working hard on our Maree Kondo skills and have had a very serious de-clutter.
What happens now?
The first stage includes the following work:
Demolition of current admin block and staffroom
Re-purposing of the current library as the new administration area and staffroom
Remodeling the front space of Rangi to house the Library
Demolition of the toilet blocks in Whenua, building an extension to Whenua and refitting all Whenua main block classrooms
How will we continue to operate during this build phase?
The office will operate from the relocatable room closest to the big tree on the field (previously Room 18 or IN room)
The Health room will occupy the small office next to this admin space (previously the ESOL room)
The Staffroom will operate out of the relocatable room at the other end of this same block (previously room 19)
Whenua Kāinga will operate from the hall using all of the hall spaces available - this includes the Music room, the Glenda Harding room, the stage, the foyer and the main body of the hall - there is a plan for fitting the hall spaces out with carpet and partitioned walls in order to clearly define learning spaces
Our school hall will be out of action for whole school events however we have arranged for alternative venues for some of our important term events in Term 4 2021 and Term 1 2022
Our library resource - both books and people have been disseminated in part into each Kāinga so we can still have some access to library books through the villages
How long will this work take?
The current plan provided there are no unscheduled interruptions is for the completion of:
Administration block and new Library space by the end of Term 4 2021
Whenua block by the end of Term 1 2022
Other works.
Stage 2 which includes the removal of some of our relocatable buildings and the replacement of Awa is due to commence in Term 1 2022:
All work is aiming to be completed in a 12 - 18 month period
